Holy Are The Hush Arbors, The Root Workers, The Invisible Churches & The Clandestine (2023)

9 x 12 mixed media assemblage on art board with corrugated cardboard, oil pastels, archival family photos, acrylic and aluminum. (2023). Sold

Inspired by Hush arbors—the secret places of worship created by enslaved Africans and their descendants to provide a haven for their faith practices away from prying eyes. Also heavily inspired by a mistaken double exposure image of my pre teen grandmother her sister & cousin outside of the church house in her hometown of Marion, South Carolina in 1939 (which I used as an anchor in the work) and The Gospel Caravans 1958 version of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot.’
